Anthropic targets business workflows with new Claude Duet agent

The company is betting on automated task management for professionals rather than personal errands, distinguishing its new tool from existing consumer-focused AI assistants.

Anthropic has officially entered the crowded market of AI assistants with the launch of Claude Duet, a tool specifically engineered for professionals and small businesses. This move positions the company to compete directly with established players like Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. The primary strategic intent is to capture user attention by focusing on enterprise-grade productivity rather than general personal assistance.

The core distinction of Duet lies in its target audience and functionality. Unlike personal agents such as Instinct, which handle everyday errands and ticket booking, Duet is designed to automate complex workflows and manage tasks. The company explicitly notes that Duet is not optimized for simple consumer tasks and cannot display its browser activity in real-time to the user. Instead, it focuses on delivering high-level value through data-driven insights and automated execution.

Duet operates by building daily briefings, creating custom dashboards, and suggesting specific actions based on the user’s existing data. Like other modern AI agents, it performs tasks in the background within its own virtual environment. This allows users to continue their work while the agent processes information, only returning to request approval when a decision or verification is required. This background processing model is central to its value proposition for busy professionals.

The timing of this launch reflects a broader industry shift from passive chatbots to active agents that work on behalf of users. Competitors are increasingly emphasizing business use cases to justify their tools. Meta, for example, has released a business-specific version of Muse that integrates with other applications, while OpenAI’s Dots maintains a professional focus through its integration with various business tools. Anthropic is aligning itself with this business-centric trend to differentiate its offering in a saturated market.

Technical capabilities underpin Duet’s functionality. The agent is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows it to interact with a wide range of external services. Furthermore, Duet can execute online purchases on the user's behalf using digital wallets like Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay, expanding its utility beyond simple data retrieval.

Despite its autonomous capabilities, Anthropic has implemented safeguards for sensitive operations. Steps involving payments require explicit user approval before execution. However, the agent has defined boundaries; it will not trade securities or transfer money between bank accounts without specific instructions. To protect user data, the company released a new classifier that checks each message to prevent sensitive information from leaking. By default, the agent will decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification details.

Claude Duet is currently available on iOS and Android, as well as on the web via Claude.ai. Access is limited to Pro and Max customers who are in a research preview phase. Users must join a waitlist to gain access, indicating that Anthropic is managing initial rollout carefully. This staged release allows the company to refine the agent’s performance and address any early feedback before a wider public launch.
